The Department of Education was never about education—it was about control. Established in 1979 under President Jimmy Carter, it has functioned as a political weapon rather than an institution of learning. With each passing administration, it has churned out failed policies that have left millions of students behind, particularly minorities.
Remember Frederick Douglass’ powerful words: “Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.” The federal government, however, has done everything in its power to prevent true literacy and critical thinking, keeping children shackled to a failing system.
And under the Obama administration, this systemic failure took a disturbing turn: it became racialized failure by design.
In the name of closing the “achievement gap,” Obama’s Department of Education cajoled states into adopting different academic standards based on race. Starting in 2009, the federal government incentivized states to create policies where white and Asian students were held to higher academic benchmarks than Black and Hispanic students.
Consider these shocking examples:
This isn’t speculation. These were officially approved plans, rubber-stamped by the Department of Education. Imagine if a 1960s-era Southern governor had proposed such a system—he would have been condemned as a segregationist. But because it was done under a Democratic administration, the media stayed silent.
State officials and parents saw through the scam. Tim Robinson, a Black father in Alabama, was right when he said, “I think having a low bar means they can just pass them on. I think it’s dumbing our race down and preparing our boys for prison.”
That’s the real crime here: a federal government that systematically ensured lower expectations for minority students, all while patting itself on the back for “equity.”
The media is now in full meltdown mode because the Trump administration has begun slashing the Department of Education’s workforce. Over 1,000 bureaucrats have already been shown the door, and the cries of “civil rights violations” are deafening. But what these bureaucrats really fear isn’t discrimination—it’s the loss of their own power.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon has made it clear: the layoffs are only the first step in eliminating waste and putting control back where it belongs—with parents and local communities.
And we already have proof that stripping federal control works.
Look at Mississippi. In 2013, it ranked as the second-worst state in the nation for fourth-grade reading. By 2022, it had jumped to 21st place. The secret? Returning to phonics-based reading instruction, which had been systematically replaced by progressive, ineffective teaching methods.
The results speak for themselves. Mississippi’s fourth graders now outperform those in Minnesota—a traditionally strong education state—with a much higher percentage of Black students. This proves that teaching methods—not race—determine educational outcomes.
The federal education system has been a catastrophe for students of all races. But rather than fix it, Democrats want to double down, pumping more money into a system that perpetuates failure by design.
Trump’s move to gut the Department of Education is just the beginning. The real victory will come when it’s abolished entirely.
Imagine a country where parents—not Washington bureaucrats—control their children's education. Imagine schools held accountable by communities, not by political ideologues in D.C. This is the future we must fight for.
The battle for our children’s minds is far from over. But one thing is clear: The Department of Education is the biggest threat to real educational equality. And the sooner we dismantle it, the better.
The education crisis is just one piece of a much larger puzzle. The same centralized forces ruining our schools are coming for your financial freedom next. You need to be ready.
I’ve put together two resources to help you break free from the system’s grip:
