In a Truth Social tantrum, Trump announced: “We are going to be taking away Harvard’s Tax Exempt Status. It’s what they deserve!” Translation: bend the knee or be economically annihilated.

And Trump is following the authoritarian blueprint laid out by Richard Nixon—one of the most disgraced presidents in U.S. history. Nixon tried to weaponize the IRS to crush his enemies, and Trump is now doing the same, aiming the full force of federal power at liberal universities like Harvard.
The goal? Create a chilling effect across academia. Message received: if you question MAGA dogma, your funding gets torched.
“PUBLIC INTEREST,” DICTATED BY TRUMP
In another unhinged Truth Social post, Trump declared: “Tax Exempt Status is totally contingent on acting in the PUBLIC INTEREST!”
And who defines “public interest”? Trump does.
This is the language of dictatorship. Trump is not just blurring the line between law and vendetta—he’s erasing it. He’s attempting to give himself the unilateral power to financially execute any group that doesn’t pledge allegiance to his fascist vision of “American values.”
He already ordered the Treasury Department to go after Harvard’s tax exemption. And MAGA goons like Newt Gingrich are gleefully promising that more universities are next.
HISTORY RHYMES—AND IT SCREAMS “FASCISM”
We’ve seen this movie before. Nixon created a secret IRS hit squad in the 1970s to destroy ideological enemies—left and right. More than 10,000 Americans were targeted, from Nobel laureates to small nonprofits, simply for holding beliefs the regime didn’t like.
And let’s not pretend this ended with Nixon. The Clinton White House used the IRS to hammer conservative critics in the '90s. The Obama administration faced scandal for blocking right-wing groups from tax-exempt status.
Now Trump is flipping the same weapon and aiming it squarely at the left—starting with Harvard. It’s not a slippery slope. It’s a damn landslide into authoritarianism.
BANNING FOREIGN STUDENTS, DEMANDING “LOYALTY AUDITS”
