Government Employees: The Untouchable Aristocracy Living Off Your Paycheck
The Taxpayer-Funded Aristocracy
It’s a tale as old as government itself: bureaucrats believe they are entitled to their taxpayer-funded positions, complete with plush salaries, job security, and benefits that private-sector workers can only dream about. So, when Trump’s administration fired thousands of probationary federal workers, the reaction was pure, unfiltered entitlement.
CBS reported that government employees were "shocked" and "angry." The New York Times lamented their "sleeplessness, anger, and tears." Some even ran to the courts, suing the administration for daring to treat them like—gasp!—ordinary workers.
But here’s the uncomfortable truth: in the real world, layoffs happen all the time. When the economy slows, when businesses restructure, or when budgets tighten, private-sector workers don’t get golden parachutes or media sympathy. They hustle, adapt, and find new work. The federal workforce, on the other hand, operates in a bubble, immune to the economic realities that govern everyone else.
Who’s Really Paying the Bills?
Behind every bloated government paycheck, behind every cushy pension, and behind every unaccountable bureaucrat, there’s a forgotten victim: the taxpayer.
Let’s do the math. The United States has more than 10 million federal employees, contractors, and grant recipients, all living off the productive efforts of 131 million private-sector workers. That’s one government-funded job for every 13 private-sector jobs. Worse, these federal workers often earn significantly more than the very people who fund their salaries.
Think about that for a moment. Imagine a single mom working the night shift at a diner, struggling to keep up with rent and childcare costs, unknowingly paying taxes that bankroll a federal bureaucrat’s six-figure remote-work salary.
Would she voluntarily write that check if given the choice? What about the construction worker paying for Department of Education consultants who have never set foot in a classroom? Or the small business owner funding the salary of an FBI agent who investigates parents for questioning school boards?
If taxpayers had a choice, would they continue financing this bloated system? Or would they reclaim their hard-earned dollars and spend them on their families, their businesses, and their futures? The answer is obvious, which is precisely why the government doesn't give them a choice.
The Real Class Warfare
Marxists love to frame economic struggles as a battle between "capitalists" and "workers," but that’s a deliberate distraction. The real class divide is between those who produce wealth and those who confiscate it.
For centuries, classical liberals—true defenders of economic freedom—have pointed out that the government class is the real parasite class. Unlike private businesses, which must deliver value to earn a profit, bureaucrats extract wealth through coercion. Their salaries aren’t earned—they’re confiscated.
Historian Ralph Raico put it best: this is the battle between the tax-paying class and the tax-eating class. And yet, the mainstream media paints these government layoffs as a tragedy, while ignoring the millions of Americans who struggle under the burden of taxation, inflation, and economic uncertainty.
But here’s the irony: for decades, we’ve been told that federal employees are the best and brightest—hyper-competent, highly educated, and essential to running the country.
If that’s true, they should have no problem finding new jobs. Right?
